Analysis of contents pages 1.

ANALYSIS OF CONTENTS PAGE 1...

The overall layout uses the colour scheme of black, red and white. This links the contents page back to the front cover by using the colours. This combination of red and black is also dramatic and sophisticated, setting a tone for the rest of the magazine.

The masthead/title of the magazine is situated in the left hand corner. This is where it has been situated for many years on the page so fans of the magazine can easily locate it. This position on a page is also the first place that the British typically look at. The colour red of the title also draws attention to it, connotating ideas of an alarm.

The use of images of the music artists breaks up the amount of text on the page so that it looks more visually appealing to the reader and not too much effort to read.

A popular British music band (Oasis) is used in the middle of the page who will be recognized easily by the target audience and therefore makes the contents page and the story line more appealing to them.

The images used include the music artists not making direct mode of address with the reader. This could perhaps suggest that they don’t have a close relationship between them and the reader, and that if they read the magazine they may gain a closer relationship.

At the top of the page it says ‘this week’ in a large bold font. This attracts attention and also reminds the audience that this is a weekly magazine. It is also a more informative title than ‘contents page’ because it could also make it sound less formal to the reader, making the page look more welcoming and therefore drawing the reader in.

The fact that the NME logo is placed in the left hand corner also links back to the front cover which also has the logo in this position on the page.

The colour use of yellow and black at the bottom of the page connotates alarms and a sense of urgency as well, which helps towards drawing the reader’s eye to it more. The use of yellow on black also attracts more attention and makes it more bold.
